Suspected burglar is rescued from the Erie Canal

LOCKPORT – A Lockport man who ran from a police pursuit and then jumped into the Erie Canal was rescued by the Lockport Fire Department on Monday night.

David O. Allee Jr., 36, of Chestnut Drive, was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest, criminal tampering, criminal mischief and possession of burglar tools at 10:15 p.m. Monday.

Police were called to the Lockport Cave Tours at 5 Gooding Street where an officer saw Allee exiting the building through a window.

Allee then climbed over a fence next to the canal, and slid down an embankment, ran towards the Locks and then jumped into the canal, according to police. When officers saw him struggling the Lockport Fire Department was called to rescue him and he was removed without incident. Allee was checked by medical personnel and put into custody by Lockport Police.
