Ohio man claims he was bilked by a supposed Olcott fishing charter

NEWFANE –Niagara County sheriff’s deputies reported Monday that they responded to the Newfane Marina for a possible fraud.

An Ohio man told deputies that he made a down payment of $125 for an eight hour fishing charter on July 25 and was advised to rent a cottage with the charter captain’s mother-in-law. He said he paid an additional $165 for overnight accommodations.

The victim said when he checked on July 24 to see if everything was set he was contacted by phone and told the charter boat had sunk and he would receive a refund of his deposit. However the victim said he has received no refund for the charter or cottage rental.

The victim also told deputies that he contacted the U.S. Coast Guard and was told it was unaware of a boat sinking in the Olcott Harbor.

The case was turned over to the criminal investigation bureau, according to deputies.
