Buffalo man pleads guilty to Amherst crash in which motorcyclist lost leg

A Buffalo man pleaded guilty today to driving while intoxicated and third-degree assault after he drove his car into a motorcyclist who lost his leg last summer in Amherst.

Patrick Burke, 50, of Scott Street, pleaded guilty to the two misdemeanors in connection with the crash June 1, 2013, on Main Street near Spindrift Drive. He was originally indicted on three felony counts of second-degree vehicular assault.

The indictment alleged that Burke had a blood-alcohol level of 0.16 percent, twice the legal limit, and was high on cocaine when he ran into the motorcyclist, Joshua Karczewski, 32, of Clarence.

Burke faces up to one year in jail or three years’ probation on each count when he is sentenced Oct. 27 by Erie County Judge Michael F. Pietruszka. The judge said he could also order Burke to make restitution to Karczewski on the assault charge.
