Looking out over the lake from the Skyway, one sees the outline of what used to be ship canals and docks for lake freighters and other commercial boats.
Fifty-five years ago, when Erie County Savings Bank saw a "big E" in those channels, the channels were working docks for boats bringing grain to places like General Mills.
Only months after the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, the last chapter in the story of Buffalo’s might as a port city was already being written -- but the big E was hearing nothing of it.
"Make big E your first port o’ call for savings and service"
“You need to only look to the lake to see the growing, pulsating, expanding business vitality of the Niagara Frontier.
“An important world port of tomorrow ... but you can plan today to enjoy its unlimited benefits as a place to live, work and prosper."
