Vietnam troops experienced a much different Woodstock

Your Aug. 17 articles brought back memories of August 1969. How well I remember. No, not Woodstock, N.Y., but Bearcat base in South Vietnam. Young people at Woodstock, young people in Vietnam. Coming of age at Woodstock; myself turning 21 in ’Nam. Musicians singing “By the time we got to Woodstock we were a half a million strong.”

I recalled that by the time I got to Vietnam we were a half a million strong. They were listening to various rockers. We were at a Bob Hope show. They had rain, we had monsoon season. They may have been “harassed” by police. We were harassed by mortars and rockets. They went home to their welcoming friends. We returned to derision from the country we served.
