Ulrich’s 1868 Tavern will host grand reopening street party today

Ulrich’s 1868 Tavern, Buffalo’s oldest bar, has spared no expense to make sure its grand reopening lives up to the fanfare that has surrounded new ownership.

This afternoon will mark the formal reopening of the historic 146-year-old bar and restaurant at 674 Ellicott St., near the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, in all its German glory with a ribbon cutting and “block party” beginning at 3 p.m.

New owner Tom Eoannou and operator Sal Buscaglia have arranged for Virginia Street to be partitioned off from Washington to Ellicott streets, where authentic German beer and complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be served from party tents amid live music from the Frankfurters.

Following a few months of renovations, the restaurant started selling beer and food again in June for the first time since August 2012, when it folded under previous ownership.
