Former asbestos removal contractor gets two years’ probation

A former asbestos removal contractor was spared more prison time Monday.

Rai Johnson, a supervisor at now defunct Johnson Contracting of Western New York, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara to two years probation for his role in the bungled Kensington Heights project on Fillmore Avenue in 2009.

Johnson and the company were accused of orchestrating a scheme designed to cut corners at the vacant public housing complex and then cover it up.

Johnson’s sentencing was the result of a prosecution by Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango and an investigation by the FBI and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
