Clinton L. Soemann, operated two businesses

Clinton L. Soemann, of Cheektowaga, formerly of Angola, died Saturday in ElderWood Health Care at Linwood, Lancaster, after a short illness. He was 79.

Born in Buffalo, Mr. Soemann grew up in Lancaster and graduated from Depew High School. After graduation, he worked at Curtiss-Wright for a year and then entered the Navy.

A licensed pilot, Mr. Soemann taught pilot instrument flight for the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He retired from his military service in 1994.

Mr. Soemann worked as a medical sales and service representative for Sanborn Instruments/Hewitt Packard in Philadelphia in 1965.

He was a medical charts sales representative for Graphics Controls from 1966 to 1973.

In 1973, he worked for Cardiac Electronics until the closing of the business.

Shortly thereafter, Mr. Soemann started his own business, Clinton Instrument Inc., selling and servicing cardiac medical equipment for hospitals, prisons and doctor offices.

In 1985, Mr. Soemann bought another business, Hoadley and Koske Inc., a firematic jewelry company. He operated both businesses simultaneously.

Known as a true sales and service person, Mr. Soemann after selling his businesses, embarked on a new career becoming a licensed real estate agent for Metro Realty from 2000 to 2006.

A life member of the New York State Fire Chiefs Association, Mr. Soemann was president of the association from 1999 to 2000.

He held various positions with the Evans Center Volunteer Fire Company, including assistant chief, chief, vice president, president and director.

He was a longtime member of the Evans Fire Council.

His wife of 38 years, Barbara Zapolowski Soemann, died in November 2010.

Survivors include a son, Clinton M.; two daughters, Karen Barrett and Tammy; a stepson, Stephen Vass; a stepdaughter, Lori Hiller; a sister, Elizabeth Abel; two brothers, George and Walter; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Evans Center Volunteer Fire Company, 8298 Erie Road, Angola.
