Residents will get news this week on the future of the U.S. Post Office in Wales Center.
A public meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday in Town Hall, 12345 Big Tree Road, on the results of a Postal Service survey that sought input by residents on cost-savings proposals. There were 123 surveys mailed out and they also were distributed at the retail counter of the post office at 12273 Big Tree Road, according to Karen L. Mazurkiewicz, a regional spokeswoman.
Since 2012, community meetings have been held regarding operations at more than 13,000 smaller post offices nationwide. “We are in the process of potentially modifying hours at several post offices in the country,” Mazurkiewicz said.
“They ask in the survey what hours the customers will like,” the spokeswoman noted. Wales Center is looking at a reduction from eight to four hours daily; the proposed new schedule will be revealed Tuesday.
There will be a minimum of 30 days’ notice before new hours take effect. “Most likely, by January all the offices will have gone to the modified hours,” Mazurkiewicz said.
