Color Run attracts 7,000 runners to Canalside

Late comers to Canalside and the Cobblestone District today might wonder about the rainbows of powder – red, blue, purple and yellow – on the pavement.

That is the residual spray that didn’t land on about 7,000 runners this morning who took over the area for the Color Run, a healthy lifestyle promotional run that bills itself as The Happiest 5K on the Planet. Those who join in the run (most of them walk for much of the untimed race) are blasted at various point with colored cornstarch, ending in a rainbow of racers trying to shake it off before they get in their cars.

The event is sponsored by a for-profit national organization, which holds the races all over the country. Often, some of the proceeds are donated to local charities. This year’s Buffalo event is helping to support Shoes for Students.

The run took place along Erie Basin Marina, Washington and Scott streets and South Park Avenue before ending before 11 a.m. in a burst of pink at Canalside.
