Waterfront Mass on Aug. 24 to be offered in memory of refugees of Irish famine

A Catholic Mass will be concelebrated at 11 a.m. Aug. 24 on the waterfront at the Buffalo Irish Famine Memorial, in memory of the thousands who immigrated to the Buffalo area during Ireland’s Great Famine.

Bishop Richard J. Malone, the. Rev. Monsignor Leo F. McCarthy and the Rev. David Gallivan will celebrate the Mass. The monument is dedicated to those Irish who found a home in the Buffalo area after enduring years of starvation. The monument is located next to Templeton Landing Restaurant.

Between 1845 and 1850, about 1.5 million peoplem in Ireland died of starvation or related diseases. Those attending the Mass are invited to visit the Buffalo Irish Festival at CanalSide following the Mass.
