Lewiston man sentenced to a year in jail for DWI

LOCKPORT – A Lewiston man who was ousted from Niagara County Veterans Court for noncompliance with the program’s rules was sentenced to a year in jail Thursday.

Thomas May, 59, of The Circle, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated in the wake of a July 5, 2013, arrest in Porter. It was his second DWI conviction, and he has already served about two months of his sentence.

Defense attorney Robert Viola said time in jail seems to have improved May’s health. He told Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas that without access to alcohol, the once-emaciated May has gained 35 pounds behind bars.
