In a safe environment, a massive collision can be exhilarating. The metal-on-metal crunch, the deafening roar of an engine and that eerie instant of silence before impact all stimulate the senses, often producing a simultaneous wince and grin.
The Erie County Fair's headline event for Thursday is the Ultimate Night of Destruction, raging at 7 p.m. on the dirt track between the Gusto Grandstand and the opposite bleachers. Tickets are $16 for adults, but children 12 and under can get in for free.
Broken down into three parts -- a bus demolition derby, figure-eight racing and a head-to-head between two Monster Trucks, Avenger and Brutus of Team Scream -- the event won't be monotonous.
While you can read about Avenger and Brutus here, the bus derby is intriguing for two reasons -- you can more easily anticipate the crashes (the vehicles don't move that fast), and the buses are so long that, provided they don't get attacked directly from the front, they can endure quite a pounding.
Following the various forms of destruction, the Fair will launch the biggest fireworks display of the season so far, capping off an evening filled with loud, sudden noises.
