WNY VegFest offered mouth-watering foods

I applaud Albert Brown for promoting alternative eating habits to meat with the first WNY VegFest. Sunday’s event was a message, “We are what we eat.” It’s time to apply this to Buffalo as it rises in the spotlight as one of the nation’s desirable cities to live in. We have awesome waterways, a vested solar energy business, a medical corridor and immigrants arriving. It’s time to explore other cuisines that consume little or no meat, and promote organic crops that have no environmental impact on our lakes.

VegFest offered mouth-watering food. Proceeds benefited two animal sanctuaries, including one in Niagara County, and an organization that donates vegan food to low-income Buffalonians.

Georges Laraque, a vegan and former Montreal Canadien hockey player, gave a powerful speech, encouraging us to view “Earthlings” on YouTube. Most people don’t care to view the behind-the-scenes of an end to an animal’s life. I watched it and now see the violence in slaughterhouses. It’s a wake-up call to examine the meat industry’s unhealthy practices, its impact on our environment and needless experiments on laboratory animals, which leads to questions concerning our future medical corridor downtown. Will there be experimental animal testing labs? Will the public know of this?

It’s time for Buffalo wings and beef on weck to take a bow. We have a chance to promote a new health-conscious image along with environmental awareness for the 21st century. It’s a new way of eating and a new way for Buffalo to see itself. The change begins within us, not the politicians.
