Newstead man charged with drug and speeding offenses

A 33-year-old Newstead man was arrested for speeding, driving under the influence of drugs and drug possession Thursday afternoon, according to Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard.

Jacob Cratsenberg of Golden Ponds Road, was pulled over by Sheriff’s Deputy Simon Biegasiewicz on South Newstead Road near Stage Road about 4 p.m. after he was allegedly clocked at speeds of up to 75 mph in a 55 mph zone. The deputy, who is an accredited drug recognition expert, spotted signs of heroin impairment before he found two bags of suspected heroin and several syringes in the vehicle.

Cratsenberg was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, speeding and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Cratsenberg was released to a third party at the sheriff’s Alden station and ordered to appear in Newstead Town Court for proceedings in several weeks. His vehicle was towed and the sheriff’s office has put a 12-hour hold on the vehicle before it might be released to a responsible party, the sheriff said.
