Aug. 5, 1969: Burger King bribery in Cheektowaga?

Plans for a Union Road Burger King were scuttled when an unsigned note -- promising cash once the deal went through — was revealed at a Town Board meeting.

Town lawmakers quickly nixed a rezoning vote needed to place the hamburger restaurant on the corner of Zoerb Avenue, roughly across Union Road from Cheektowaga High School.

Burger King officials cried foul play and insisted the letter writer was against the restaurant and was looking to turn lawmakers against the rezoning.

“Mr. Swiatek, a Democrat, said someone had written him ‘suggesting a donation for my party if I voted a certain way.’ ”
