Aug. 5, 1949: Trash leads the way to Buffalo

A large portion of what is now Buffalo’s celebrated and rejuvenated Outer Harbor was known 65 year ago as “the dump.”

As this photo illustrates, taking Route 5 from the south into downtown Buffalo was often a trashy ride. Decades before the Skyway was built, drivers were at water level, but with more garbage in sight than water.

“ 'Disgraceful … unbelievable' were words used by Henry Seilheimer, Chamber of Commerce clean-up campaign director, in describing the garbage and trash-littered area in Fuhrmann Blvd. near the city dumps.”
