Pillar’s offense propels Bisons to win at Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. — Another day, another pair of doubles for Kevin Pillar.

The outfielder has been seeing the ball well at the plate and his hitting streak continued Monday.

With a pair of doubles, an RBI and two runs scored Pillar helped anchor the Buffalo Bisons in a 7-4 win over the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park.

It was a typical, and appropriate, performance for Pillar who began his Monday by being named the International League’s Batter of the Week.

Pillar extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

His first hit put the Herd on the board in the third inning as his double scored Adron Chambers from first. Pillar, who took third base on the throw home, scored on a on a sacrifice to left by Ryan Schimpf for a 2-0 lead.

The Tides got one back in the bottom of the inning but the Herd opened up a 5-1 lead in the sixth.

With one out, Andy LaRoche reached on a throwing error and Brett Wallace walked. A single from Kevin Nolan scored LaRoche.

Later in the inning, Mike Nickeas had a two-run single to give the Herd a cushion.

Chambers led off the ninth with a solo home run to make it a 6-1 lead and Pillar scored another run on a fielder’s choice from LaRoche.

The Herd needed those runs as the Tides scored three in the ninth, but Bobby Korecky struck out the final two batters to secure the win.

The weekly honor for Pillar was his second of the season. That makes him the first Bison player to win two weekly awards in one season since right-handed pitcher Nelson Figueroa did it in 2009.

From July 28-Aug. 3, Pillar hit .345 with three home runs, 20 total bases and five stolen bases. He leads the league in doubles with 33.

The series concludes today (12:05 p.m., Radio 1520 AM) with lefty Raul Valdes (4-3, 3.60) getting the start for Buffalo against righty Tyler Wilson (2-0, 3.25).
