DEC asks for help in bird survey

The Department of Environmental Conservation invites area observers to participate in surveys of game birds.

The Summer Turkey Survey began Friday and continues to Aug. 31. Observers can obtain a form and record individual and flock sightings. To register in DEC Region 9, check with senior wildlife biologist Emilio Rende at 372-0645. For statewide information on this survey, visit

The DEC this year has established a Genesee Valley Focus Area for Monitoring Pheasants. Farmers in parts of Livingston, Genesee, Wyoming and Monroe Counties are being asked to report pheasant sightings during their summer field activities. Call (518) 402-8886 or email:

Deer alliance formed

Following a Quality Deer Management Association-sponsored summit in March, organizers formed a National Deer Alliance to unify hunters in a single-voice group and help address to help hunters’ concerns, according to executive director Craig Dougherty.

The group hopes to develop ways to more quickly exchange information on ecology, management and politically-based issues between the 225 stakeholders who attended the summit and hunters nationally. To sign up for a free membership, visit

The DEC has issued a lengthy guideline/listing of things to do and not do to discourage nuisance bear activity. Hunting seasons and areas have been expanded in recent years, but bear populations continue to expand in size and range. New regulations will open bear hunting season in all upstate counties of New York.
