Villella named acting Lockport assessor

LOCKPORT – Longtime city employee Lena D. Villella has been named acting city assessor, Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey said.

The Common Council is to vote Wednesday on confirming the open-ended appointment, McCaffrey said. Villella, who has worked for the city since 1987, will have a raise above the $50,346 she earned last year as real property appraiser.

The assessor job became vacant as of July 1, the expiration date of the city’s $53,100, 15-month contract with Girasole-Penale Appraisal for assessment services. Harry Williams, an employee of that firm, had been acting assessor.

McCaffrey said she wasn’t sure how long Villella’s appointment would last. She said that although there has been talk of sharing an assessor with another municipality, “We don’t have any discussions under way at this point for that. This gives the city some time to nail that down.”

Villella served as acting assessor for a few months in 2004, but rejected a permanent appointment at that time because of dissatisfaction with the pay and benefits offered.
