Independent Health, an Amherst-based, nonprofit health plan, was established in 1980. It has since grown to become Western New York’s No. 2 health insurer, serving almost 375,000 members. The company employs 999, and its workers who took the survey lauded it for the growth in their careers, the confidence managers have in their abilities and the meaningful service the business provides.

It offers a comprehensive list of health management services, including HMO, POS, PPO and EPO products. It also provides Medicare and Medicaid plans, traditional indemnity insurance, consumer-directed plans, health savings accounts and coverage for self-funded employers. Pharmacy benefit management, specialty pharmacy and the Independent Health Foundation are among its subsidiaries.
