NFTA OKs $11.3 million purchase of 22 new buses fueled by compressed natural gas

Twenty-new Metro buses fueld by compressed natural gas will be rolling over local streets in 2015 as the result of a purchase authorized Thursday by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority.

Commissioners approved spending $11.3 million for vehicles from Nova Bus of St. Eustach, Que., and Plattsburgh to replace buses purchased between 1996 and 2000, NFTA spokesman C. Douglas Hartmayer said.

“They will be much more efficient to operate and better for the environment,” said Hartmayer, adding the purchase will be financed by the Federal Transit Administration, state Department of Transportation and NFTA.

Hartmayer said commissioners also authorized refinancing of a series of airport revenue bonds that should result in substantial savings to the authority.
