Water slide returning at Payne Park Memorial Pool in North Tonawanda

NORTH TONAWANDA – The water slide at Payne Park Memorial Pool was closed for the entire summer last year but when the pool reopens Friday the water slide will be back.

During the summer of 2013 the support columns were sandblasted and painted and structural improvements were made. This past spring the worn pressure-treated railings were removed and replaced with galvanized steel fencing and railings.

Parts were fabricated at Liston Manufacturing of North Tonawanda, and the painting was done by Erie Painting and Maintenance of Cheektowaga. Design work was done in house by the city engineer and completed with assistance of the Department of Public Works and Parks Department.

Mayor Robert G. Ortt said the slide would have been torn down without the hard work and dedication of the city employees. He said the refurbished slide will be much safer.

The Payne Park Memorial Pool opens for the season at 1:15 p.m. Friday and open swims will be held from 1:15 to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Adult lap swim will be held from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Fees are 50 cents for residents and $2 for non-residents.

The Raindrop Pool, for children under eight, is adjacent to the pool and is free of charge. It is open from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. Children under 6 must be accompanied by an adult.

Both pools are closed on Sundays.

Details on the summer swim lessons are available on the City of North Tonawanda website, or by calling the Recreation and Parks Department at 695-8520.
