Celebration to mark additions to Hispanic vets monument

A celebration to mark the completion of the first year since a monument honoring Hispanic American veterans was unveiled and some recently finished additions is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park.

The Western New York Hispanic American Veterans Memorial Committee has invited both dignitaries and the public to attend the gathering.

Jose C. Pizarro, committee chairman, said the memorial is the first historical landmark of its kind for Hispanic Americans in this region and serves to honor the service and sacrifice of past, present and future Hispanic American veterans from the area.

“This monument was an effort of local community visionaries and leaders in collaboration with many public, private, corporate and individual donations,” Pizarro said. “We have just completed the installation of benches and markers of credit and historical significance, and it is an opportunity to thank everyone that made the construction possible.”

The ceremony will take place at the waterfront military park near the Korean War Monument. A small reception will follow aboard the USS Little Rock.
