Letter: Incorporate green design into RiverBend project

Incorporate green design into RiverBend project

Great to see the RiverBend project may be redesigned as a larger space.

Perhaps this time around the designers can take the time to incorporate more sustainable and energy-efficient materials than the metal wall panels called for in the present design.

As a member of Buffalo green building community, I attended a public forum on RiverBend in January. At that meeting, I brought up a past experience where I advocated for locally produced energy-efficient materials for a taxpayer-funded project.

I was told then, as I was told with RiverBend, that it was way too early in the process to even think about materials. Then, when I read about progress on the project, as I did with RiverBend, and contacted the developer, I was told that it was way too late to have locally produced energy-efficient materials considered for the project.

If we are going to build taxpayer-funded facilities to house green manufacturing jobs, let’s take the time to incorporate locally produced green materials, installed by local skilled craftspeople.
