$116,821 restitution ordered for man impersonating optometrist

A Monroe County judge ordered a Tonawanda man to pay $116,821 in restitution after he admitted impersonating a licensed optometrist while working in Rochester.

Shamil Tadros, 45, had previously pleaded guilty to engaging in a fraudulent scheme to bill Medicaid and other payers for ophthalmology services.

Tadros, who attended optometry school but did not get his state license, runs Pittsford Optical outside Rochester.

His sentencing is the result of investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, New York State Department of Education and the New York State Department of Financial Services Criminal Investigations Unit.
