Summer concert scene heats up for WNY teens

Teen music lovers in Western New York know that summertime means loads of concerts, and the almost never-ending list of shows this summer is sure to please fans of all types of music.

Of course Vans Warped Tour will be hitting Darien Lake, as it does every year, for a day filled with music from more than 100 bands, including pop-punk legends Bowling for Soup and ska veterans Less Than Jake, as well as some more modern acts such as Motionless in White and Mayday Parade, just to name a few. The Warped Tour rolls into town July 8.

For fans of heavier rock, the Mayhem Festival will also be coming to Darien Lake on July 29. Sponsored by Rockstar energy drink, this all-day festival includes heavy metal artists Avenged Sevenfold and Korn, just to name a couple.

Other rock shows coming to Darien Lake this summer include the Monumentour (July 2), a tour co-headlined by Fall Out Boy and Paramore, and the Carnivores Tour (Aug. 21), headlined by Linkin Park and also featuring 30 Seconds to Mars and AFI.

Fans of an older generation of rock music also will enjoy the summer concert lineup at Darien Lake, which includes rock gods Kiss and Def Leppard (Aug. 13), as well as Journey and Steve Miller Band (June 24). Also coming this summer, ’80s metal legends Motley Crue set out on their farewell tour, which also will feature glam rock pioneer Alice Cooper (Aug. 31). Lynyrd Skynyrd will bring its Southern rock along with Bad Company to Darien Lake on July 13.

Fans of rock and metal aren’t the only concertgoers who will be more than pleased with the music scene this summer. Country music listeners also will have the chance to see favorites such as Jason Aldean along with Florida Georgia Line (July 12, Darien Lake), as well as Brad Paisley (July 6, Darien Lake) and Blake Shelton with the Band Perry (Aug. 2, Darien Lake). And, no country fan would want to miss Rascal Flatts (Sept. 4, Darien Lake).

Last but certainly not least, fans of pop music will want to be heading to the First Niagara Center at least twice this summer, once in late June to see smash hit pop star Bruno Mars (June 30), and again in July to see pop queen Lady Gaga (July 7). Fans also will be excited to see the world-famous boy band the Backstreet Boys, along with Avril Lavigne (June 18, Darien Lake) and indie group OneRepublic (Aug. 9, Darien Lake).

These are just a few of the many fantastic concerts this summer has in store for area music fans. Whether you like to bang your head to some rock ’n’ roll or just dance the night away, you’re bound to enjoy some great shows this summer.
