Crisis Services to provide help at Catholic hospitals for sexual assault victims

Crisis Services of Erie County will start providing all Catholic Health hospitals with 24-hour-a-day availability of specially trained sexual assault nurse examiners to support victims of sexual assault, the organizations announced.

The service will be available to patients at the hospital system’s major facilities: Kenmore Mercy, Mercy in South Buffalo, the Mercy Ambulatory Care Center in Orchard Park, and Sisters in Buffalo and its St. Joseph Campus in Cheektowaga.

“Having these nurses available around the clock, is a valuable asset for victims of sexual assault who seek care in our emergency departments, as well as the ER staff who care for them,” Aimee Gomlak, vice president of WomenCare at Catholic Health, said in a statement.

She said the service will help ensure patients receive the attention they deserve to care for their physical and emotional needs, as well as manage the collection of forensic evidence and police reporting.
