“Love Is a Choice,” a documentary on the life of St. Gianna Beretta Molla, will be shown Monday night at Our Lady of Victory Basilica.
Molla, who suffered complications while pregnant with her fourth child in 1962 and died days her daughter was born, was canonized May 16, 2004, by Pope John Paul II. She was the last person to be canonized by the pontiff.
The miracle recognized to canonize Gianna Molla involved a mother, Elizabeth Comparini, who was 16 weeks pregnant in 2003 and suffered tear in her placenta that drained her womb of all amniotic fluid. A normal term of pregnancy is 40 weeks, and Comparini was told by her doctors that the baby wouldn’t survive.
Through praying to Gianna Molla and asking for her intercession, Comparini delivered by Caesarean a healthy baby despite the lack of amniotic fluid for the remainder of her pregnancy
St. Gianna is the patron saint for mothers, physicians and unborn children.
Molla earned degrees in medicine and surgery from the University of Pavia in 1949 and opened a medical clinic in Mesero, Italy, in 1950. She specialized in pediatrics at the University of Milan in 1952 and eventually gave special attention to mothers, babies, the elderly and poor.
The documentary, which also includes footage of her canonization, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Marian Room located in the lower level of the basilica, 767 Ridge Road.
