Lockport approves pet crematory, new fitness center

LOCKPORT – The Common Council last week approved special- use permits for a pet crematory on West Avenue and a fitness center in the Kenan Arena.

Orleans County Coroner Scott Schmidt plans to open a pet funeral facility, including the furnace, in the former Rodgers Welding Supply shop at 520 West Ave. A pet cemetery is not allowed, the Council ordered.

Gina Nowak received approval to open a fitness training center on the second floor of the recreation building attached to the Kenan Arena, 195 Beattie Ave. Because it is a private business set up in what is otherwise a tax-exempt property and the Kenan Center is a not-for-profit entity, Nowak will be taxed, Corporation Counsel John J. Ottaviano said.

The Council also approved a city code amendment allowing building inspectors and police to ticket vehicles illegally parked in front or side yards.
