Buffalo man who tried to use counterfeit money sentenced to jail

A man who tried to use counterfeit money to pay for more than $2,500 worth of merchandise at a Cheektowaga store was sentenced to six months in jail, police announced Friday.

Leroy Green, 35, of Buffalo, originally was charged with a felony count of criminal possession of a forged instrument after being arrested last November at the Target store on Transit Road.

Police said Green after he tried to buy merchandise worth $2,528.17, using counterfeit currency. He was in possession of 91 $50 bills; 70 $20 bills; and six $100 bills, police said.

Green pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of the same charge before Town Justice Paul Piotrowski, who issued the sentence Thursday.
