Road to the Draft: Scott Crichton

Position: Defensive end.
School: Oregon State.
Measurements: 6-foot-3, 273 pounds.
40 time: 4.84 seconds. Bench press: 24 reps of 225 pounds. Vertical jump: 31.5 inches.
Career stats: 36 starts, 22.5 sacks, 51 TFLs.
Draft projection: Second round.

Lowdown: Crichton (pronounced CRY-ton) could be a consideration for the Buffalo Bills early in the second round, if they want to add more help for Jerry Hughes at left defensive end. That’s Crichton’s ideal NFL spot. He’s a high-effort, complementary edge player in a 4-3 defense. He’s comparable to a Chris Kelsay in that he’s not likely to be an elite sack producer, and he’s not a pure speed rusher. Kelsay had better test numbers (4.72 in the 40 and a 36.5-inch vertical jump) but didn’t have as many college sacks (12.5). Crichton is capable vs. the run. He also has 10 career forced fumbles. Most scouts agree he would have been better served with another year of college experience, but his family needs the financial support. He probably will be taken in the first half of the second round.

He said it: “You've just got to get off the ball and attack, attack the opposing player, and you've got to just play on their side of the ball. Coaches always told me, whatever you do, no matter if you are wrong, you've got to play on their side of the ball, and that's what I really took pride in this year.”
