Undercover police stop in Newfane was justified, sheriff says

NEWFANE – The Niagara County Sheriff Department had questioned the validity of a stop by an unknown undercover officer in Newfane two weeks ago, believing the man in the unmarked car was not an officer. On Monday the stop was clarified after an investigation found the undercover officer was a federal agent working in his official capacity.

The investigation began after the stop at 12:45 a.m. April 6 when a female driver was stopped and questioned by a man in an unmarked police vehicle on Ewings Road. The woman contacted police because she believed the driver was not a police officer.

After that report, Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour provided safety guidelines for drivers to follow when being stopped by an unmarked vehicle.

A subsequent investigation determined the officer was a federal agent and his stop was justified, according the Niagara County Sheriff Department.
