Seat belts and air bags save two women from serious injury

The use of seat belts and the deployment of air bags in two separate accidents within two hours of one another Monday on Grand Island saved two women drivers from serious injury, according to first responders.

In the first crash, members of the Grand Island Fire Company rushed to the westbound service road along West River Parkway about 4:45 p.m. and extracted a 72-year-old Grand Island woman who had lost control of her car and struck a utility pole. She was taken to Kenmore Mercy Hospital for medical evaluation.

The fire company also responded to a crash at about 6:25 p.m. on the Whitehaven Road overpass above the Niagara Thruway, where they extracted a 22-year-old Grand Island woman after her vehicle struck a guard rail and a light post. She refused medical treatment.

Erie Country sheriff’s deputies and state police directed traffic around the accident scene.
