Letter: Circus elephants are subjected to cruelty

Circus elephants are subjected to cruelty

I, too, was disgusted with the circus elephant picture in The News. While living in Tanzania, East Africa, for five years, I traveled on more than 200 safaris to watch these magnificent creatures. Elephants are the most regal, trusting and innocent animals I have ever witnessed. They have strong family values. These values are their most important reason for existence. They feel compassion, they feel loss, they suffer depression and loneliness, and they mourn their dead.

The inhumane training and treatment of circus elephants is cruel and horrible. It destroys their soul. Read “Behemoth,” the book a March 19 letter writer spoke of. Maybe when you’re finished, you will ask yourself what has happened to our sensitivity and compassion.
