Building Center gets $10,000 grant

NIAGARA FALLS – The city’s banking arm last week awarded a $10,000 grant to a new building supply company on Niagara Falls Boulevard.

The Niagara Falls City Development Corp. approved the funding for Greater Niagara Building Center, located at the former Dunn Tire site at 9540 Niagara Falls Blvd., which opened about six weeks ago, said William Burg, the company’s president and chief executive officer.

The company is a wholesaler of “premium” building products, which Burg said are not available through local chain stores.

It does not sell directly to homeowners, instead working through select contractors, he said.

“We’re aligning ourselves with better contractors,” he told members of the agency’s board.

The grant funds will be used to improve the look of the building, including renovating its facade and adding new signage.

In the long run, Burg promised to create five full-time jobs. He said he expects one full-time employee to be hired by May 1, with two more to be hired as the season picks up.

Burg worked for more than 15 years as a regional manager for a national company providing this type of service, city staff found in its review. He is investing $62,000 of his own money into the business and has also received a $50,000 bank loan.

Burg is a past board member and vice president of the Niagara County Builders Association.

The business has a five-year lease with the property owner, according to the company’s application for city funds.

The grant was approved, 11-0.
