Colleges / UB’s Kuras sets swim marks

Brittany Kuras’ last swimming meet for the University at Buffalo was one for the record books.

Competing in three events at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., she saved her best for last in Saturday’s 100 freestyle. She finished 20th out of 56 in 48.53 missing the finals by just .21 seconds.

On Friday, Kuras swam a 1:46.37 in the 200 freestyle to finish 30th out of 50 swimmers. She was just one second shy of the final.

In the 200 individual medley on Thursday, Kuras finished in 1:58.01 to not only break the school record, but also set a new Mid-American Conference standard. The UB senior finished 30th out of 63 and missed out on advancing to the finals by just .66 seconds.

Kuras holds seven school records and became just the fourth swimmer in MAC history to win the league’s Most Outstanding Swimmer Award three times.

BASEBALL: Canisius finished a three-game sweep of Saint Peter’s, 9-8, at the Demske Sports Complex. It was the Griffs’ fourth straight win to improve to 14-7 overall and 3-0 in the MAAC.

Devon Stewart allowed four runs over seven innings with three strikeouts.

Niagara dropped both games at Siena, 3-2 and 10-5. Geoff Seto had two hits in two trips in the opener. Liam Stroud took the loss after giving up two runs on six hits through 3.2 innings.

Greg Rodgers, Jordan Schwartz and Taylor Hackett had two hits each in the nightcap.

St. Bonaventure gave up 23 hits in a 17-5 loss against VCU.

ROWING: The University at Buffalo women competed against some of the nation’s top crews on Saturday.

In the Varsity Eight race won by host Clemson, the Bulls finished fourth in 6:59.79.

The boat was made up of Emily Glasgow (Mount St. Mary), Justine Bottorff, Melissa Ward, Haley Franco, Samantha Paige, Heide MacMahon, Meghan O’Brien, Sara-Ann Fox and Kaitlyn Koscielniak (Sacred Heart).

UB will row at the Murphy Cup in New Jersey on Saturday.
