Wet weather arriving later today

For the basketball crowd, the party will stay inside tonight and tomorrow if weather is a factor, with a little snow arriving late this evening followed by rain Saturday morning.

“There might be a brief period of sleet, but temperatures will be rising into the upper 30s overnight, so it will be mostly wet in the morning,” said Jim Mitchell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Basketball fans who are traveling from Dayton and Villanova for the NCAA games at First Niagara Center Saturday night shouldn’t have much trouble on the roads, with the low pressure system expected to stay mostly to the north as it heads eastward.

Those coming from Syracuse or Connecticut could encounter more precipitation, but Mitchell said the storm is not expected to be serious enough to generate any type of advisory or warning.

Area roads could be icy for a brief time overnight as the snow switches to rain. The forecast for Saturday afternoon is cloudy and colder, with a few flurries possible. By Sunday, most of the precipitation will be gone, according to the Weather Service, but the temperatures will be in the unspringlike 20s.
