Columbus McKinnon buys Michigan maker of workstation cranes

Columbus McKinnon Corp. has acquired a Michigan company that makes overhead light rail workstations that are used in auto plants and other manufacturing sites, the Amherst-based material handling equipment maker said Friday.

Columbus McKinnon said it has purchased Unified Industries, a Howell, Mich., company that had $12.4 million in sales last year.

“Unified’s workstation cranes and light rail lifting systems are a natural extension of our hoist product portfolio,” said Timothy T. Tevens, Columbus McKinnon’s president and chief executive officer.

The acquisition is expected to add to Columbus McKinnon’s profits during the fiscal year that begins in April.
