Downtown construction worker injured by pipe

A 40-year-old construction worker suffered a minor head injury just before 9 a.m. Thursday at a downtown renovation project, according to fire officials and coworkers.

The individual, whose name was not released, was standing beside an excavator digging a trench at the rear of a building on the south side of Seneca Street between Elm and Michigan streets when a buried pipe became dislodged and struck the worker in the jaw and face, coworkers said, adding that he remained conscious.

As a precaution, the worker was transported to Buffalo General Hospital for treatment, an official at the work site said. The accident occurred at what is being developed into “The Apartments at the Hub,” formerly the home of a long-time commercial tent and awning business in the multistory brick structure, adjacent to Coca-Cola Field.
