Carrollton girl in critical condition with injuries from shaking

A 19-month-old girl is in critical but stable condition at Women and Children’s Hospital after being transported there from Cattaraugus County with serious head trauma believed to have resulted from extensive shaking.

Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s investigators arrested Jessica N. Courteau of Bradford, Pa., this morning on charges of first-degree assault and reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Staff at Bradford Regional Medical Center in Pennsylvania first reported that a child with serious unexplained head injuries had been brought in from a Carrollton address after emergency personnel responded to a call of a child having difficulty breathing. Courteau was arraigned in Town of Great Valley Court and is being held on $100,000 bail.

Courteau’s relationship to the child was not immediately available.
