Two elderly Attica men arrested for trafficking in copper cable

BATAVIA – Two elderly Attica men were arrested Wednesday by state police following a two-month investigation into their alleged trafficking in copper cable, allegedly for the past three years or so.

Wayne Pierce and Eugene Reding, both 72, have been charged with stolen property and grand larceny counts for allegedly getting land owners in the towns of Alexander, Darien and Bethany to let them dig up cable on their properties since 2011 and then selling the cable to WNY scrap years and splitting more than $100,000 in proceeds. The investigation was conducted by members of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation assigned to the agency’s Batavia office.
