Letter: Should people take law into their own hands?

Should people take law into their own hands?

I have neither owned nor fired a weapon since my Army days, but since Sheriff Tim Howard’s recent admonition that each of us must take “personal responsibility” for our safety, I will have to reconsider.

I had always thought that a citizen’s first response to a crime should be to call on law enforcement agents who are specifically trained, equipped and authorized to protect the community. However, Howard’s clear implication is that each of us must be prepared to respond with our own gun, just in case the cops are late or absent.

I’ve got a better idea: When our citizenry becomes fully armed, why bother making the call at all? We can take over the duties of the police completely, thus allowing us to disband yet another institution of government intrusion into our lives.
