Letter: Remove the Skyway as soon as possible

Remove the Skyway as soon as possible

I was pleased to read the Feb. 13 News article, “National group wants Skyway gone.” It discussed a recent study by Congress for New Urbanism that cited the Buffalo Skyway as one of the 10 “Freeways Without Futures” in North America. This list recognizes the urban highways that are doing significant damage to their cities and are seriously in need of replacement. The study said the bridge is functionally obsolete, structurally deficient, a winter hazard and a blighted corridor.

Past articles in The News have said over the next 20 years, it will cost more to maintain the Skyway than to tear it down and build a new Buffalo Harbor bridge. I hope Darrell Kaminski, the state DOT’s regional director, and business leaders in favor of maintaining the Skyway read this report. Even with the great strides that have been made in the Buffalo Harbor, the Skyway is an albatross that will choke development on our waterfront and keep Buffalo stuck in the past.

Given the mistakes made in the past, this is a vital development project to help restore Buffalo as a great city. We can’t afford to have long debates and also accept the DOT’s ignorance on this matter. This needs to be our top priority in Western New York. We as a community need to get behind Rep. Brian Higgins and push our politicians and business leaders to tear down the bridge as soon as possible.
