Where We Live: Depew

The color guard of the Civil Air Patrol, the Air Force’s Auxiliary, will open Monday’s meeting of the Village Board by posting the American flag.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Depew Municipal Building, 85 Manitou St. A work session will begin at 6.

Patrol members, who annually observe Legislative Day in Washington, D.C., were invited to observe government functions at the local level and meet board members. Deputy Mayor Jules Pecora is a former Civil Air Patrol member.

The group was created in December 1941, when Franklin D. Roosevelt was the country’s president. It was seen as a way to use America’s civil aviation resources to aid the war effort with missions, including anti-submarine patrols, border patrols and courier services. As today’s U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, it provides emergency services, including search and rescue, disaster relief, homeland security and counter-drug missions.
