Common Core forum planned Feb. 13 at Falls High School

NIAGARA FALLS – A forum featuring critics of the Common Core school curriculum standards will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 in Niagara Falls High School.

The event, called an “education summit” by one of its organizers, Assemblyman John D. Ceretto, R-Lewiston, originally was to have been held Jan. 6 at Niagara County Community College but was postponed by bad weather.

“This summit is a great opportunity for parents, educators, administrators and other stakeholders in the community to voice their opposition to the state testing fiasco,” said Kevin Rustowicz of Niagara Wheatfield High School and president of Niagara County United Teachers.

Scheduled speakers at the event include Walter Polka, former Lewiston-Porter Central School superintendent; John McKenna, principal of Fletcher Elementary School, City of Tonawanda; and Ashli ► CQ ◄ Skura-Dreher, a Lew-Port special-education teacher and the current state teacher of the year.
