Tonawanda woman takes plea in cocaine case

LOCKPORT – A City of Tonawanda woman, who admitted driving to North Tonawanda City Court with 60 small bags of crack cocaine in the glove compartment of her car, pleaded guilty to a drug felony Monday in Niagara County Court.

Rebecca L. Szumigala, 20, of William Street, was admitted by County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III to the judicial diversion program of court-supervised drug treatment after she pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Szumigala faces up to 5 1/2 years in prison if she washes out of the program.

Her passenger, also questioned by North Tonawanda police about the drugs, found in a consent search of the auto, is under indictment for third- and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Eli L. Clark, 23, of Evelyn Street, Buffalo, pleaded not guilty Jan. 13.
