Replay denies Vanek OT winner, ex-Sabre rips NHL war room

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Here's a glaring example of video review failing.

Old friend Thomas Vanek scored the winning goal in overtime this afternoon for the Islanders against St. Louis. Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak was even headed for the dressing room. The officials on the ice called it a good goal.

But the NHL war room in Toronto inexplicably said Vanek kicked the puck in with his left skate. Here's the official explanation. I have no clue what they could have possibly been looking at. There's zero "distinct kicking motion". At the end of this video, Islanders broadcaster Howie Rose exclaims, "Are you kidding me?"

No Howie, they're not. Would have loved to have heard what else he said too. Especially when the Islanders lost in a shootout.

For his part, Vanek is likely going to get fined for a postgame comment that was 100 percent right: "I think it's a terrible call. I don't know if it's who we are. If that's Pittsburgh or a top team, that's maybe a goal. It's just a terrible call. We all know what a kicking motion is."

The war room saw something different. Here's the video:
