Vargas discusses her drinking

ABC News reporter Elizabeth Vargas has publicly acknowledged that she’s an alcoholic, and said it took her years to admit it.

In an interview aired Friday on “Good Morning America,” Vargas said hiding her problem from others was exhausting.

“Even to admit it to myself was admitting, I thought, that I was a failure,” said Vargas, who noted that she had reported several “20/20” specials on drinking yet couldn’t acknowledge her own alcohol dependency.

Meanwhile, she tried to bargain with herself.

“I started thinking, ‘Well, you know, I’ll only drink, you know, on weekends,’ ” she recalled. “ ‘I’ll only drink, you know, two glasses of wine a night. I won’t drink on nights before I have to get up and do “Good Morning America.’ ” But those deals never work.”

She said her husband, singer Marc Cohn, wasn’t fooled.

“You have a problem. You’re an alcoholic,” she said he told her, adding that his words “made me really angry, really angry. But he was right.”

Last fall, Vargas spent several weeks in a treatment facility and is now in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Nominees to be tweeted

The nominees for this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards will be announced via Twitter and Facebook in a series of videos by TV personalities.

Fox Sports broadcaster Erin Andrews, Willie and Korie Robertson from “Duck Dynasty,” Beth Behrs from “2 Broke Girls” and hosts from “CBS This Morning,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “The Talk” and “The Insider” will make the announcements on Jan. 29.

The 49th annual ACM Awards will air live on CBS from Las Vegas on April 6.

Other announcers include actress-singer Lucy Hale from “Pretty Little Liars,” and reigning ACM songwriter of the year Dallas Davidson.

Big-ticket wedding is perk

One of the big concerns with many weddings is the cost. Who pays? How much should a dress cost? Is it fair to ask someone to sell a kidney just to pay for a honeymoon?

Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici have had no such concerns. In fact, the bride often has been encouraged to think bigger and more expensive when putting together their nuptials for “The Bachelor: Sean and Catherine’s Wedding” that will air at 8 p.m. EST Sunday on ABC.

At a recent ABC party, Giudici was wearing an engagement ring that looks like it could be the cornerstone for a building. It, like the rest of the wedding, has all been paid for by the studio.

“That’s one of the perks of being The Bachelor. You get a really nice ring for free,” Lowe says with a smile. “It’s a pretty sweet deal.”

The Boss to play Cape Town

The man who was Born to Run has come all the way to South Africa for a first-ever performance in the country.

Bruce Springsteen arrived in Cape Town on Friday ahead of four concerts with the E Street Band.

Springsteen flew into Cape Town in a private jet, removing a black leather jacket in the sunny summer weather as he headed to a waiting vehicle.
