Garden Notes: News of area clubs and events

The Western New York Iris Society will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at 5755 Genesee St., Lancaster. Dave Baehre will discuss the 2013 Siberian Convention in Michigan and present photos of American Iris Society gardens, which specialize in beardless Iris and include the 2013 Morgan-Wood Medal Winner, ‘Swans in Flight,’ hybridized by Bob Hollingworth.

The Hamburg House and Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Hamburg United Methodist Church, 118 Union St., for a presentation and business meeting. For club information, call Carolyn Sheehy at 337-3242.


The Town of Amherst is offering two series of garden classes taught by the Master Gardeners of Erie County.

The first six classes, Gardening 301, include soil, perennials, annuals and seed starting, compost, vegetable gardening and turf. Classes will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning next week in the Harlem Road Community Center conference room, 4255 Harlem Road, Amherst.

The second group of six classes, Gardening 302, begins March 19. Topics will include bulbs, pruning, fruit growing, plant disease and integrated pest management, houseplants and insects.
